Consecutive Interpreting - the key to mutual understanding in conversations (in-person and online)

Consecutive interpreting is one of the most traditional and widespread types of interpretation. It requires the interpreter to listen to the speaker's statements, take notes, and translate the content into the target language after the speaker finishes. This allows meeting participants time to understand the message and ask questions. Consecutive interpreting does not require specialized equipment, except for a microphone for a larger number of meeting participants. Consecutive interpreting is suitable when the number of meeting participants is small and during meetings with a larger audience. There are two basic types of consecutive interpreting:

1. Longer statement interpretation - in this case, the interpreter usually stands next to the speaker during the speech, listens, and takes notes. The speaker may speak for up to 5 minutes. Then, the interpreter reproduces the main points of the speech in the target language. This type of consecutive interpreting is practised, for example, during official speeches by politicians or other public figures.

2. "Sentence by sentence" interpretation - in this case, the speaker usually utters only 3-4 sentences and takes a break. The interpreter does not take notes due to the short statement. This type of consecutive interpreting is used wherever a high level of detail is required, for example, in court during witness or expert hearings, in situations where it is difficult to take notes, or when the speech is accompanied by a presentation, such as when a foreign specialist demonstrates the operation of a machine to production workers.

Simultaneous Interpreting - ideal for large events (in-person and online)

Simultaneous interpreting is when the interpretation occurs simultaneously with the speaker's speech. The interpreter usually works in a special soundproof booth, listens to the speaker through headphones, and immediately conveys the content in the target language. This method requires high concentration and a fast pace of work, which is why this type of interpretation requires the involvement of at least two interpreters, who usually take turns every 30 minutes. Simultaneous interpreting is very effective during large events, such as international conferences, multilingual congresses, deliberations, seminars, training sessions, and high-level meetings with foreign guests. Simultaneous interpreting also works well for guided tours of foreign guests in factories or plants. In this case, tour guide systems are used instead of soundproof booths.

A particular variant of simultaneous interpreting is relay interpreting – indirect translation through another foreign language, generally used when there is a demand for translation within rarer languages. One interpreter's translation becomes the simultaneous output for another interpreter, allowing translation coverage even when no direct interpreter is available in a given language pair. The disadvantages of this technique include a higher risk of making mistakes (a "broken telephone" effect) and a noticeable time difference between the speaker's speech and the moment when the translation reaches the listener. Implementing this type of simultaneous interpreting requires flawless collaboration between the team of 4 interpreters engaged in such a project.

Whispered Interpreting - indispensable, discreet support for individual participants (in-person and online)

Whispered interpreting is a very discreet and flexible form of interpretation, which involves whispering the translation into the ear of a meeting participant in real-time, that is – similar to simultaneous interpreting – simultaneously with the speaker's speech, but the difference is that this type of translation does not require the use of specialised equipment.

Interpreters do not occupy booths but sit next to a small group of listeners and, in a hushed voice, translate the speaker's words on the spot. We use a dedicated platform for online interpreting to communicate between the listener and the interpreter. Whispered interpreting is used during business meetings, negotiations, or conferences with a limited number of participants needing translation, typically used when only a few people do not know the language used during a given event. For larger numbers of people, it is recommended to use tour guide systems.

This type of translation also requires the involvement of two interpreters. It is permissible to use the support of a single interpreter only when the translation is workshop-based and requires non-stop translation for a maximum of 30 minutes.

Sight Interpreting - interpretation based on written text (in-person and online)

Sight translation is a specific interpretation, being a translation "on the fly", not derived from listening but based on written text. It involves orally translating a read document in real time. This method is often used during reading documents at meetings, presentations, or lectures when there is a need for an immediate translation of the text.

Sworn/Certified Interpretation – a guarantee of credibility and legality (in-person only)

"Pre-event" online interpreting platform support includes setting up the event according to the client's needs, managing licences, invitations, and registrations, communicating with participants, and conducting tests with speakers and interpreters. This ensures the event runs flawlessly in a calm, predictable manner.

"During-the-event" online interpreting platform support involves the ongoing management of the conference, presentation or meeting platform, not only in selecting the appropriate team of interpreters but, most importantly, ensuring the utmost comfort for all speakers and participants. This includes real-time technical support, admitting specific groups of participants at designated times, managing virtual views, recording the event, and ensuring that each participant experiences the event in the language of their choice, from those contracted by the client.

"Post-event" online interpreting platform support encompasses various activities related to communication with present and absent participants, reporting analytics to the client (which can often include crucial, detailed data on attendance and participant identity), preparing and providing the client with event recordings and text communication transcripts, as well as storing the entire client platform configuration for a specified period, which is particularly important for serial events.

Conference Interpretation Equipment for On-site Events

Depending on the type of interpretation and the specifics of the event, it may be necessary to use appropriate equipment. POZENA Multilingual provides the essential equipment:

Full cabin translation setup: soundproof booth + two interpreter desks (microphone and receiver) + infrared radiator + headphones for the audience.

Soundproof booth (booth only): This solution is not recommended, as it requires the client to provide the remaining elements of the setup. Compatibility with the booth must also be tested.

Headphones for cabin translation: Using these with our transmitter set is best to ensure compatibility.

Tour guide system: Small headset sets used for mobile translations or whispered translations. Please ensure an adequate number of receivers is reserved for the audience.

Microphone with amplification: Required for consecutive translations for larger groups and training sessions held in large rooms.
